Heartburn usually refers to pain and burning sensation felt in the chest just below the sternum. Contrary to its name, the condition has nothing to do with the human heart but is linked to the esophagus which is a long tubular structure that connects the mouth to the stomach. The pain and burning sensation produced by this disease is not confined to the breast only, as often it radiates to other parts like the neck, throat and jaw. It is actually a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and is usually accompanied by swelling and a sour taste in your mouth.

Causes of heartburn

As already mentioned, the esophagus is a tubular structure that connects the mouth and stomach. Thus, the food we eat reach the stomach through the esophagus. Once the food reaches the stomach, the acid reflux into the esophagus is prevented by a circular muscle structure located at the intersection of the esophagus and stomach. This is known as lower esophageal sphincter or LES. But from time to time, either because of muscle weakness esophageal sphincter defects inherent in the structure, or accumulation of excess stomach acid, stomach acids go back to the esophagus.

Our stomach has a lining or coating that protects it from stomach acid or digestive system, but this coating is not present in the esophagus. So every time the acid from the stomach goes into the esophagus,  it causes inflammation of its lining resulting in this disease. Risk factors for this include the consumption of highly acidic foods, caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, etc. conditions such as obesity and pregnancy can put excess pressure on the stomach and thereby affect the functions of the esophageal sphincter. .
, certain medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen and hiatal hernia are some other risk factors or causes of acid reflux and heartburn.

Smoking, overeating and eating the wrong kinds of liquids and food and living in an environment full of stress, increases the symptoms of acid reflux. However, these lifestyle changes alone will not cure or eliminate the symptoms of  chronic heartburn or their root causes. Those suffering from severe and chronic acid reflux need to consult their physician to obtain a correct diagnosis. Only then will they be able to address the causes of their condition.

Acid reflux symptoms can be reduced through medication. Mild symptoms are usually dealt with over the counter antacids such as Pepcid AC, Tums, and others. Prescription medications for more severe symptoms and condition are prescribed by your doctor. The major problem with almost all of them are side affects. In some cases, side effects are so severe that they are worse than the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux are intended to treat. As a result, many people seek alternative remedies that have little or no side effects to treat the painful symptoms of heartburn.

Symptoms Of Acid Reflux Can Be Controlled Through the use of Time Tested Proven and Natural Remedies. Natural remedies, has almost no side effects and in some cases, are beneficial for the body. Probably one of the oldest remedies for heartburn is the use of raw apple cider vinegar. I remember the lady next door who was the local medicine woman in our neighborhood. The causes of heartburn were not fully understood then in terms of lifestyle.  But she knew how to treat it and she did it with raw apple cider vinegar.. She would make a tea of 1 tsp cider vinegar apple, a teaspoon of pure honey and eight ounces of water. You were to drink this remedy all day with special emphasis on the time just before meals. Only in the most severe cases of acid reflux disease, did this medicine is not work well.

Raw apple cider vinegar has in it what is called “mother.” It is the opaque part, which is near the bottom of the jug gallon. If you do not have your mother apple cider vinegar, it was probably distilled and as such does not work as well as real cider vinegar. When you make tea, you should shake the jar before using to ensure you’ll get some of the “mother” when you mix the tea. The “mother” contains enzymes and other compounds that enhance the digestive process.

It is important that you follow the instructions and continue to drink tea during the day. This natural home remedy really works on most forms of heartburn acid reflux. It only takes about 10 minutes to begin to feel the reduction in symptoms of heartburn. Again this remedy has no side effects that we have heard.

Heartburn or acid reflux is a serious disease that affects many people. This simple remedy may be able to control or eliminate your acid reflux and heartburn. If this or any other remedy is not effective in reducing your symptoms, you should consult a medical professional who specializes in treating acid reflux and heartburn problems.
